Pug ‘flung’ from complex, cops search for owner

The Powai police are investigating a disturbing case in which a pet dog was thrown out of a residential complex last week and left to die.

The pug, barely a month old, crashed on a car, bounced off and hit the ground at Lake Lucern Complex around 9.45 pm on June 3.

No resident attended to it, and after 15 hours the dead dog, with its skull smashed, was taken away by a garbage truck — an incident that has outraged animal welfare activists. Witnesses say the pug was flung from a “higher floor” of the complex’s 22-storey B wing, but so far none of the occupants of the block have claimed it to be their pet. The society’s management also refuses to say if anyone from the wing, one of the four in the complex, is responsible, hinting that the dog may have jumped off.

But animal lovers say it’s highly unlikely that the pug would have jumped on its own, and even if it had, it wouldn’t have landed so far. The pug’s body was discovered at least 15 feet away from the building.

“It was too young. Dogs of this particular breed do not jump or run around much,” said Nisha Kunju of the Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), who filed a complaint of animal cruelty at the Powai police station on Saturday. “We inspected the building and found that the railings are too high for the dog to jump off. Also, the grills in balconies are too narrow for it to slip out,” Kunju said. “It was definitely thrown out by someone.”

Aresident said that he saw someone standing in one of the balconies of B wing immediately after the dog crashed to the ground. “A man was standing in the balcony and watching. When he realised that we were looking up, he rushed inside,” said the resident, who didn’t want to be named.

Some shocked members enquired with flat-owners on higher floors that night, but none of the occupants claimed to own a pug. “Nobody came forward to claim the dog. We then checked with the security and found that at least two members owned a pug. One of them showed us his dog, while knocks on the other house went unanswered,” said the resident, who, along with others, alerted PAWS.

The next day, the society’s manager asked sweepers to get rid of the body, which was taken by a garbage truck. “It’s too early to say if any member was responsible for the incident,” said society manager S Naik.

Meanwhile, Powai Sub-Inspector Pramod Khatke said that the police were talking to residents to find out what happened.
