Robbery solved even before police complaint!

Two professors who had come to IIT-B to attend an event were pleasantly surprised when the cops gave them their laptops a day after the gadgets were stolen when they went to the police station to register a complaint.

Not every one is as lucky as Professor Anita Mukund Poojar and Professor Jaymala Rama, who had recently come to the city to attend the Cyber Security Workshop at IIT-B in Powai between May 17 and May 21. Officials of the Powai police station handed over their stolen laptops even before the duo could register a formal complaint.

While Poojar teaches at Walchand Institute of Technology in Solapur, Rama is part of the Thiagarajar College of Engineering in Tamil Nadu. They said their laptops went missing from their hotel rooms on May 19 around 11pm. Speaking to mid-day, Poojar said, “It was unbelievable that the Mumbai police recovered our laptops even before we could register a formal complaint. The moment we entered the police station, they showed us our laptops. The machines contain the work of our lifetime.”

Poojar and Rama had arrived in the city to attend the workshop at IIT-B. A total of 250 participants from across the country were a part of the event. The duo was given accommodation at the MTNL guesthouse in Powai.

Cop speak

Assistant Police Inspector K S Mitbaukar from Powai police station said, “After attending the workshop, the two returned to their rooms. They left their laptops inside and went for sightseeing around 5.30 pm on Monday (May 19). After they returned at 11 pm they noticed that their rooms’ doors were open and their gadgets were missing.”

So after enquiring with the management of the guesthouse, they decided to lodge a police complaint. On reaching the police station, they were in for pleasant news that their laptops have been recovered and the thief, Rajeev Jagdev Dhurendar, had been nabbed.

Tipped-off

Mitbaukar said, “Before I could report to the station on Tuesday (May 20), I met one of my sources who said that Dhurendar had returned home with two laptops. Dhurendar was picked up following this information, and he confessed to the crime during questioning.

We were waiting for the complainants to come to the police station and register the offence.” Dhurendar has been booked under sections 457 and 454 (trespassing) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and has been remanded in judicial custody.
