Woman in love flees from father, finds refuge in 5-star hotel

Tells cops her family, who snatched her passport, is against her German boyfriend

Fearing her vengeful Riyadh based father and brothers, who have snatched away her Indian passport to force her to marry into their own community, a young woman, who is in love with a German national, has now sought refuge in five star hotel in Mumbai.

Maria Bahamam, 25, waited till she reached India to escape her aggressive father who, she alleged, assaulted her in their home in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where she lived with her mother and five siblings.

Bahamam now wants to settle down in India with the German man but her family is dead against this. The young woman says she has been on the run since her arrival in Mumbai on August 8. “I met my friend in Juhu upon arriving but my father tracked me down.

He reached Juhu and snatched away my passport and the next day, forced me into a car to take me to Hyderabad where we originally come from. However, I managed to escape to Pune on the way and came back to Mumbai. I don’t move out of the hotel anymore,” Maria said.

Her passport is with her father in Hyderabad. Her family even hacked into her Facebook account, her email account, and harassed her friends who tried to help her, she alleges.

Scared that her father might go to any lengths to get hold of her and drag her back to Hyderabad, she has booked herself into a hotel here where she remains holed up the entire day. “I don’t leave my hotel room because I fear for my life because my father can take drastic steps if I refuse to do what he wants, ” Bahamam toldMirror.

The young woman claims she has been a victim of domestic violence and sexual harassment at home in Riyadh, where she has lived since she was born.

Her father Ahmed Saeed Bahamam, 64, is from Hyderabad and runs a shop in Saudi Arabia. He and her uncle, who too lives in Hyderabad, are forcing Bahamam to leave India, to marry a person of their choice and take up Saudi citizenship.

Bahamam asked the Powai police for help as her passport was snatched from her at Andheri, but they said she had to make a complaint in Hyderabad. Her father, meanwhile, registered a missing complaint in Hyderabad, following which a police team from that city came to Mumbai looking for her.

They tracked her down with the help of her friends, and finally asked the Powai police to hand her over. Maria told the Powai police that she had left her family of own free will as she “was beaten up by her father and elder brother with knife, TV wires and slippers”.

The Hyderabad team left with a copy of her statement. Fearing that the family might still track her down, Maria, a major in computer science, has deactivated all her social media accounts. Her boyfriend, Nikolai Domeyer, 36, a civil engineer, works in Riyadh with a construction firm.

“He is ready to convert to Islam before marrying me. I don’t know what is wrong with my family. I am scared for my life now and will never return to Hyderabad ,” Maria said.

YL Yadav, Senior Inspector of Powai Police told Mirror: “Bahamam had come to Powai police station with her friend who was being harassed by the Hyderabad police to disclose Bahamam’s whereabouts.

A statement was registered at Powai police station; this will help the Hyderabad police to close the missing complaint.” When Mirror contacted Maria’s father, he said: “We have settled the matter at Powai police station and have returned her passport.”

He also denied hiring a professional to hack Maria’s email or social media accounts. However, Maria said her passport had not been returned to her.
