The RTO on Wednesday issued notices to the school bus operator for suspension of the driver’s licence and permit of the vehicle involved in an accident in Powai.
The bus, with 13 children from PodarInternationalSchool, Powai, had rammed into a tree seconds after it left Vikhroli (W) early on Tuesday. While the school claimed all children escaped unhurt, the Parksite police said three children and the attendant suffered minor injuries.
Regional transport officer (eastern suburbs) B I Ajri told TOI, “I visited the school and met the authorities on Wednesday. I inspected the bus and cancelled its fitness certificate till the operator makes modifications (in the vehicle) and makes it roadworthy again.”
He said RTO officials would conduct a seminar for the school authorities and parents on Monday, when the latter will be informed about the transport department’s school bus policy.
“We want to create awareness on safety norms and ensure that every child is safe while travelling in school buses in the suburbs,” he added.
C S Mani, general manager (transport), Podar group of schools, said, “RTO officials visited the school on Wednesday, inspected the buses and were extremely satisfied. The bus involved in the mishap was new and had acquired a fitness certificate last week. We are contemplating an increase in our bus fleet to ease things for the children.”
