Two real estate agents assaulted a traffic constable on the Vashi Bridge following an argument on Tuesday night, then bundled him into their car for a prolonged beating and drove off.
The men, Raju Raut (38) and Anand Bhute (33), who were allegedly drunk, were arrested at the Mankhurd check post after an alert motorist spotted their car, a Mahindra Scorpio, and informed the police.
Late on Tuesday night, Raut and Bhute, residents of Powai and Koparkhairane, were taken to the Trombay police station, from where Vashi cops were expected to take over their custody.
The assaulted constable, Sandesh Shelvant (30), is attached the Navi Mumbai traffic police. He had an altercation with the two men after he flagged them down on the Vashi Bridge at 9 pm. “Shelvant stopped their car for a routine check. The accused, however, got into a fight with him. They assaulted him and forcibly took him in their car,” said Senior Inspector Sanjay Khire of the Trombay police station.
Khire added that the accused drove to Mankhurd, where the driver of a Chevrolet Tavera saw Shelvant being assaulted in the back of the Scorpio and alerted cops. “Shelvant has suffered minor injuries to his hands. The accused were drunk at the time of the incident,” Khire said.
Tuesday’s incident comes after an apparently drunk insurance agent from Pune knocked down two police constables with his BMW on Pedder Road on Sunday night.
