The Powai police, based on documentary evidence, has registered a negligence case against a woman doctor running a clinic in Haryana who allegedly accidentally forgot a piece of cloth in the stomach of a 29-year-old pregnant woman while performing a scissoring surgery. Though the operation was successful, the victim started experiencing pain due to the cloth left behind.
The Powai police said the complainant, Saurav Bharadwaj (31), is an officer with Indian Oil and the victim is his pregnant wife Arti. The couple lives in Govandi and had gone to their hometown in Haryana, where their daughter was born.
Arti was admitted to Agarwal nursing home in Kurukshetra district of Haryana on October 28 and was operated upon for the delivery by alleged accused Dr Tulika Agarwal. Arti gave birth to a girl and was discharged on November 1, after which the couple returned to Mumbai. Even though the operation was a success, Arti started suffering unbearable pain in her stomach.
At first, her family felt that the pain was due to the recent surgery but when it continued for a week, they got worried and approached the Joy hospital in Chembur on November 11, where a CT scan was conducted. The scan showed presence of a foreign object in Arti’s body, following which the family approached the Dr L.H. Hiranandani Hospital in Powai.
Police sub-inspector, Shrikant Kanth said, “On January 2, an operation was conducted at the hospital and a cotton cloth was removed from her body. Based on the facts, an FIR has been registered under Section 337
(causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life
or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against
the doctor, on Monday night. The case has been transferred to Haryana police. We will keep a tab on the case.”
