9 hurt as BEST bus rams into another in Powai

A BEST bus rammed into another from behind in Powai on Sunday afternoon, injuring eight passengers and a conductor.

“One of our buses, plying on route number 382, was ferrying passengers from Sahar Cargo to Anushakti Nagar. As it reached the Panch Kutir area in Powai around 4.30pm, the driver applied brakes as a car stopped in front of it and another BEST bus, which was speeding, rammed into it from behind,” said Virendra Bagul, public relations officer, BEST.

The second bus was on route number 422 and ferrying commuters from Bandra to Mulund. The conductor of this bus, two women and a male passenger suffered injuries, while three women and two men, who were travelling on route no 382, were also injured. “All victims were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar,” said an BEST official.

“Two women suffered severe injuries; they were bleeding,” said an eyewitness to the accident. Bagul said that a woman passenger had sustained serious injuries in the eye and nose. “She was later shifted to a private hospital,” he said, adding that a few passengers also sustained neck and shoulder injuries. Sources said that most commuters had hit their heads on the seats in front of them when the accident took place.

BEST officials are questioning the two drivers, Ashok Sawant (route 382) and Santosh Chavan (route 422).

But till the time of going to press, the police said they have not received any complaint about the accident.

An officer said the matter might have been resolved “outside” and hence, did not reach the police station. “I have asked the officers on duty to check about the incident. Till late night, we have not received any information about the accident,” said senior inspector YL Jadhav, Powai police station.
