The Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy expressed gratitude to the Honorable Supreme Court for the firm stand taken by it by stopping the Italian Ambassador from leaving India, as it was on his written assurance that the Hon. Court allowed the marines of Enrica Lexie ship Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girnone to go to Italy for four weeks to vote in election in their country and promise of returning to India to face trail for killing Two Indians.
But Italy did a U Turn and informed India , that the two Italian marines who were charged with murder of two Indian fishermen off kollan coast, will not be returning to India to face trail. This was, going back on word given by a country to another.
It was only when the Indian Supreme Court restrained the Italian envoy from leaving India that the Italians came to their senses.
Millions of Dollars of business at stake in exporting, goods to India and a diplomatic stand off resulted in Italy bowing down. This has also come with some conditions like the Italian marines will not be given death sentence. Conditions like these are not yet clear.
One thing to be proud about is the Supreme Court’s strong stand in protecting the respect of Indian victims.
