Cult classic film ‘Sholay’ box office collections have hit Rs 6.30 crore at the domestic box office in the first three days after its release on January 3 – 38 years after its original release.
Sholay 3D, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini in their unforgettable roles has been released in a stereoscopic 3D version.
While Sholay 3D collected Rs 1.50 crore on the opening day (Friday), it did box office business of Rs 4.80 crore over the weekend (Rs 2.25 crore on Saturday and Rs 2.55 crore on Sunday), according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Review: Sholay 3D
While some of the original cast and crew had no objection with Sholay 3D, director Ramesh Sippy had made his anti-release stand very clear. The Bombay High Court, however, rejected his plea seeking a stay on the release of Sholay’s 3D version made by his nephew Sasha over a copyright dispute.
The film’s writers Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, however, promoted the film in full swing.
Director Ketan Mehta, who was involved in the 3D conversion of Sholay, said revisiting the classic with the new technology was challenging. Producer GP Sippy’s grandsons had approached Mehta for the 3D conversion of the Amitabh Bachchan-Dharmendra starrer through his Maya Digital Studios.
Computer-generated graphics have been introduced in certain sequences of Sholay 3D to give the impression of “popping out of the screen”: such as the collision between the train and a pile of logs; Thakur’s bullet racing towards the handcuffs worn by Jai and Veeru; the bomb blast sequence with Amitabh Bachchan makes believe as if debris will blow itself out of the screen and envelop the viewer
