The Malad police recently arrested a property developer for cheating a Malad-based jeweller of Rs2.50 crore after promising him a plot of land in Juhu.
According to the police, investigations have revealed that the developer has cheated several other people of money running into several crores, with cases being registered against him in Vasai, Powai and Dahisar. A murder case has also been registered against him in Pune.
The accused, 48-year-old Bhikamchand Sisodiya, runs a company called Sisodiya Developers in Borivli. In 2011, Sisodiya got in touch with the complainant, Sukhalal Kachara, 48.
“The complainant Kachara’s friend and ex-colleague, Jagdish Chauhan, is a relative of the accused. He convinced Kachara to get in touch with Sisodiya for a good property deal,” said Chandrakant Gurav, inspector (crime) of Malad police station.
Following several meetings and discussions, and displaying a plot near Juhu Church, Sisodiya finally struck a deal with Kachara. Over the next few months, Kachara handed over few blank cheques and cash amounting to Rs2.50 crores to Sisodiya through Jagdish.
However, after a while, the developer stopped contacting Kachara. “When the complainant made a few inquiries, he found out that the property had been sold to another party. When he asked for his money, he was threatened by Sisodiya and his men. Later, Sisodiya absconded to Rajastan,” added Gurav.
Kachara then approached the Malad police and registered a complaint against the developer. While Sisodiya and Jagdish have been arrested, the manager of the firm, Dhaval Jain, who was also involved in the scam, is on the run.
Sisodiya has been remanded in police custody at Powai police station for a similar cheating case. He was booked under forgery, cheating and several other relevant sections of the IPC. “He has several offices in Mumbai, including one in Borivli. We are trying to find out for how long he has been cheating people, and how many people he has cheated,” said Gurav.
