Decks cleared for another east-meets-west project

Municipal corporation kick-starts the ambitious Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project with acquisition of Saki Vihar Road in Powai.

In a major boost to the proposed Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project, which BMC wants to complete within a year (2015), the civic body has completed the paperwork to take over the Saki Vihar Road in Powai, which is presently being maintained by the Dairy Development Board.

BMC had called for a request for proposal (RPF) to appoint a consultant to prepare a project report for the proposed 9.2-km road in 2013, and has now appointed two consultancy firms — Technogems and Pentacle – who are scheduled to submit the report in a couple of months.

“The project includes stilt road work, like the ones on coastal roads. Besides, the road will pass through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and through marshy land, hence a geo-technical survey to check the nature of the soil is needed,” a senior BMC official said.

While the Dairy Development Board officials remained unavailable for comment, BMC has issued notices inviting suggestions and objections from citizens, as per the norms.

Before the Metro was launched, the four link roads – Jogeshwari-Vikhroli, Andheri-Kurla, Mahim-Sion and the latest, Santacruz-Chembur – connected the city’s west to its east. Additional Municipal Commissioner S V R Srinivasan said that the project cost would be finalised only after the project reports have been submitted, but the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road was one of the most ambitious projects undertaken in the city, as it aims to connect the two most important arterial roads, the Western and Eastern Express Highways.

“The road will pass through private properties but we are confident of sorting out such issues. There are no residential houses along the way, and we are hopeful the project will be completed faster compared to the other four link roads,” Srinivasan said.

Mulund Corporator Manoj Kotak said that connecting Goregaon to Mulund will change lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens.

“People spend more than two hours changing trains and buses every day travelling from the city’s western suburbs to east or vice-versa. I have been following up on this project and finally, BMC completed the formalities. We are hopeful the project will be completed in 2015,” Kotak said.
