Troubled actor Robin Williams was found hanged inside his home after not been seen in public since his birthday three weeks ago, it has been reported.
The star is also thought not to have left a suicide note at the scene of his death. The revelations come as it emerges an image of the popular actor with Crystal the monkey, his Night at the Museum co-star, could be the last known picture of the star.
It was posted on July 21 – Robin’s birthday – on the actor’s Instagram page.
TMZ reported the star of Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning Vietnam did not leave a suicide note at the scene of his death.
An audio recording of the Marin County Fire dispatcher speaking on a scanner revealed his death was an ‘apparent suicide attempt by hanging,’ Mail Online reported.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said that Williams was found unconscious yesterday afternoon at about 12:00pm inside the residence in Tiburon near San Francisco.
An investigation into the cause and circumstances of his death is currently underway by the Investigations and Coroner Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, officials said.
Police said that Williams was last seen alive at the property, where he lived with his wife Susan Schneider, at approximately 10:00 pm on Sunday.
Williams apparently committed suicide following a severe battle with depression. The Good Will Hunting star was just 63 years old.
Ms Schneider led tributes to the actor last night, saying the world had lost one of its most beloved artists.
Susan, who married the star in October 2011, said: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings.
“I am utterly heartbroken.
“On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief.
“As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he game to millions.”
Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.
His publicist confirmed the news saying: “Robin Williams passed away this morning.

A forensic examination is currently scheduled today with subsequent toxicology testing to be conducted.
Williams, born in Chicago, shot to fame playing alien Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy, and went on to establish a successful career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting.
His film career includes such acclaimed films as Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, The Fisher King and Good Will Hunting.
