Fake policemen who rounded up 2 girls in Powai find real cops

Two Powai perverts, who had ’rounded up’ two teenage girls and their friends on Sunday night while posing as cops from the detection squad, were in for a shock when they found the real cops appearing out of the blue.

Around 1.30 am Monday, Assistant Police Inspector Vijaykumar Doke from the Saki Naka traffic police division and three traffic constables saw two men frisking a girl in the bushes near the Powai lake. The real cops, returning after a nakabandi duty, saw another girl and two boys standing near an autorickshaw parked nearby, and called out to the men.

“As soon as the two realised we were closing in, they jumped into an auto,” Doke said, adding the cops gave chase on their patrol bikes and nabbed the accused, identified as Prakash Shinde, 37, and Prakash Kirpe, 38, from Tunga village in Powai.

The four told Doke that they worked for a catering firm and were returning home in an autorickshaw after serving at a party. Shinde and Kirpe accosted them near the Powai lake, ordered the auto driver to leave, and accused the four of “indecent behaviour”.

The couples told police that the two identified themselves as cops from the Powai police’s detection squad, took away their mobile phones and frisked the girls in the bushes. “My team and I were on a nakabandi duty on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. We managed to nab the two and handed them over to the Powai police,” Doke said.

The two were booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 354 (molestation), 420 (cheating), 170 (impersonating a public servant) and 34 (criminal act committed by more than one person with a common intention), said Senior Inspector YL Jadhav from Powai Police Station.

“We are investigating to find out whether the two had harassed others as well. They would have taken away the mobile phones of the four victims and their money but for the traffic cops’ intervention,” Jadhav said. A senior officer said that there have been several instances around the lake of fake cops harassing couples. “The couples immediately go on a defensive when accosted by people claiming to be cops. We advise everyone to dial 100 if there is even a slightest doubt about the person claiming to be a policeman,” the officer said.
