Former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has called for creating an educational system that highlights the importance of entrepreneurship. Addressing the students of IITBombay on the occasion of its 54th Foundation Day in Powai, he said, The education system must be designed to see that we create employment generators and not employment seekers.”
He suggested a three-pronged strategy that will make education more attractive, skill-oriented and create employment potential. He felt the education system should orient students towards setting up their own business which will provide creativity, freedom as well as the ability to generate wealth. Kalam said banks should provide venture capital to graduates who have the aptitude and desire to set up businesses. Thirdly, he said, entrepreneurs should produce competitive products” to become successful.
The former president asked IIT Bombay to take the lead by compiling success stories. This document could highlight venture capital funding and employment generation opportunities across India and indeed worldwide, by utilizing the services of its placement cell. He said that the IIT curriculum should provide market research support to help the entrepreneur select the right products and hold his hand during the incubation period until he may become independent.
Through his hour-long address, Kalam emphasised on research as a vital tool for innovation and excellence. He said, The teachers’ love for research is vital for the growth of the institution. Experience in research leads to quality teaching.” He advocated the use of science and technology as well. Kalam inaugurated the new building of its bio-Sciences and bio-Engineering department and presented awards to alumni, young achievers and faculty.
