CCTVs to catch offenders in Aarey jungles

With Goregaon’s Aarey Milk Colony and the dense forests that envelope it becoming a hotbed of crime of all forms, right from murder, rape and robbery to suicides and dumping of bodies, the police department have decided to cover the area under the watchful gaze of CCTV cameras and additional force.

At least 20 cases regarding dumped bodies, and more than 200 of accidental deaths have been registered by the Aarey Colony police in the last three years. In order to bring down the crime rate, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) on charge of the area has instructed officials to install three CCTV cameras along the three toll entrances to Aarey – Goregaon, Marol and Powai – apart from deploying six night cops at these tolls and more patrolling officers inside Aarey.

“We enforced these measures in a phased manner in the last two months, and we have not had a single incident of murder, robbery, or rape in Aarey Colony this year. We had been receiving complaints from citizens who feared for their safety,” said DCP Punjabrao Ugale (Zone XII).

The department has deployed six cops who are stationed at the tolls between 9pm and 7am every day. “Every vehicle that passes through the area is checked thoroughly and a register is maintained with details of the commuter, address, contact number and registration number of the vehicle. In the past, people bring bodies in vehicles from distant areas and dump it here,” said senior inspector Vilas Chavan of Aarey Colony police. He added that the area’s remoteness and the woods that surround it render it vulnerable to crime.

The CCTVs are being monitored by cops, and if any suspicious movement is discovered in wee hours, police ask entrants, mostly motorists, to leave, said officials. “We have enhanced vigilance inside Aarey. Our officers patrol the area at night. It has not only reduced crime instances, but also checked other activities like drug abuse,” added Chavan. He added that such stringent measures would rid the premises of crime.

In August 2014, a 46-year-old woman was allegedly robbed at knifepoint by a taxi driver and his accomplice when she was on her way to airport. The woman, boarded the taxi from her Bangur Nagar residence, but she was taken to an isolated spot near Aarey Colony, where the driver’s accomplice was waiting. They pulled out a knife and fled with Rs25,000 and left the woman stranded in the forest after threatening to kill her.

In another incident last year, a 17-year-old youth was brutally stabbed by three of his friends in Vikhroli over a petty fight, after which they dumped his body in the Aarey colony.
