400 potholes reported in a day

Close to 400 potholes have been reported in a day after heavy rain lashed the city Friday. This brings the number of complaints registered on the civic pothole tracking website since June 10 to almost 9,500. Meanwhile, BMC’s lags behind repair work on about 2,500 potholes.

As of Saturday evening, 9,479 potholes were reported on www.voiceofcitizen.com. The number was 9,110 on Friday when 132 complaints were registered through the day. However, only 6,999 of the 8,442 planned repairs were carried out.

During the dry spell after Friday’s heavy downpour, 300 potholes were closed. BMC has allotted Rs 59 crore from its current budget for fixing potholes during monsoon.

Maximum potholes that come under civic roads department central agency’s purview have been reported from G-North ward comprising Mahim, where less than 50 mm of rainfall was recorded. However, more than 100 of 455 complaints received here are yet to be addressed. L ward, comprising Kurla, reported second highest number of complaints at 436. The central agency data claims that only 10-odd potholes remain to be fixed here.

Other wards where over 350 potholes were reported are P North, D ward and S ward. In P-North ward (Malad), where 374 potholes were reported, 280 have been repaired. In the upscale D ward comprising Napean Sea Road, Malabar Hill and Grant Road, 250 of 368 complaints have been adressed while 268 of the 361 complaints in S-ward (comprising Bhandup and Powai) have been fixed.

On roads belonging to other agencies of BMC such as the storm water drains (SWD), sewerage operations and hydraulic engineering departments, only 61 of 439 potholes have been closed. Many have been reported on roads under the SWD department.

Meanwhile, filling of potholes on roads that fall under agencies other than BMC is virtually non-existent. None of the 279 potholes reported on roads belonging to the MMRDA, PWD, MHADA or railways, has been repaired. Similarly, the 88 complaints on stretches under the care of utility agencies such as MTNL and Reliance are yet to be attended to.
